Ever been in the middle of writing a story and hit a mental roadblock? Merriam Webster’s dictionary defines writer's block as “a psychological inhibition preventing a writer from proceeding with a piece of writing.” (Merriam-Webster, 2024). I used to just give up and walk away, leaving my unfinished novels to gather dust. But now, I've found a solution - writing prompts! They're like a little kick in the imagination to get the story moving again.
So, Tyler, this broke 21-year-old university student, gets a fat stack of cash magically appearing in his bank account. What's a guy to do? He's living the dorm life, trying to scrape by, and suddenly he's rolling in dough. What's his next move?
"Click, clack click clack went the keys of the laptop as I typed in my bank id number and security code and hit enter. The screen changed and my account information appeared. As I looked at my account, the amount of $250,259.29 screamed at me. I blinked repeatedly, trying to adjust my vision to correct what I was seeing. My memory told me I had $259.29 in my account, enough to last until the end of the week when I transferred my monthly budgeted amount from my student loan. This must be some form of mistake. Why does my bank account have 250,000 dollars more in it? There must be some mistake. I picked up my smartphone and called the bank."
I find that using a writing prompt, whether it's a photograph or something like the one I used, is a great way to overcome writer's block. How do you solve your writer’s block and move on with your story?
Have a great long weekend.
